Why does my doorbell ring when nobody is there?

What I mean is that, every time my doorbell rings, it is not possible that somebody has rung it. This always happens mostly at night, and rarely during the afternoons or the mornings. Sometimes, when it rings, I check outside to see if someone had pranked us, no one is there at sight. Who would want to prank us during 9-12 pm? One time my doorbell rang at 3 in the morning.
This always happens to us, like probably 30 times a year. I need an answer, my dad thinks it was a wireless doorbell remote while my sisters think it is a spirit trying to enter our house :S

I have a wireless doorbell, and the same thing happens with me when the batteries get low. I know its not a prank, as it will ring, yet when I answer no one is there. There was a few inches of fresh snow on the ground, and no foot prints. I changed the batteries and it stopped happening.
