Important Home Projects to Increase Home Safety

In most instances whenever the economy turns for the worst, crime sees a significant rise. Self defense reaches past an individual’s skill to fend themselves on the street, it means having protective measures inside your home too.

Too many houses are not well protected against the possibility of invasion. Alarm systems are a good starting point, and can make a lot of noise if someone actually tries to break in. The real goal is to make your home as unappealing as possible to a potential intruder.

Thankfully there are countless things you can do to defend yourself in addition to your home that are easy DIY projects. Set aside a couple of weekends and increase your security.

Securing the Area

Despite who you talk to, any home safety expert will advise you that first you need to make sure the windows and doors are clear. You don’t want to have landscaping blocking visibility around your windows. It is far too easy for people to stand in the shrubbery and peek in to see if you are home. Trim back hedges, trees, bushes and other things that obstruct a clear view of your home’s windows.

Connect motion sensitive lights to your home. Start by making a sketch of your home with approximate measurements. Prepare to add ample lights in order to cover the whole perimeter in the sensor range. Many such lights now use solar cells so you don’t even need to hook them into household current.

Maximize Window and Door Security

One of the favorite entry spots for any burglar is a sliding glass door. Since the latch can get loose over time, it is often an easy way to enter a home. Check your latch periodically and tighten it up if it is loose.

Exterior doors should be between 2-3 inches in thickness and have a solid core. Each door should have at least one deadbolt that opens with a key. Remember that hinges should be located inside the home.

Both sliding doors and windows can be additionally secured with a small barrel lock placed within the frame. These clever locks stop the panels from sliding even if the main lock is not in place. Furthermore a broomstick located in the track can be a simple, but more importantly inexpensive solution too.

Worst Case Scenario

However if all your implemented measures fail and an intruder enters your home, you should be ready to guard yourself. In this situation a TASER is the perfect choice for self defense.
