What Should I Look for In a Power Point Projector?
If you need to purchase a power point projector for an upcoming presentation or deadline, time is of the essence and with all the technical jargon and options, this task can really seem overwhelming. Thus, this short guide was written with you in mind, to fill you in on just the projector basics. With all the buzz words and projector jargon out there, your knowing the basics will be a great help to you in your projector search.
Pixels make up both the image you see on your computer screen and that of any image projected by a digital projector. Your video source, in this case your laptop, determines the initial resolution. Ideally, your projector should operate natively at this same resolution.
Amazingly, not long ago the common resolution used to be rather crude VGA (640 x 480), this was later replaced by SVGA (800 x 600) and the more modern quality XGA (1,024 x 768). One can even venture into the really high end resolutions such as SXGA and UXGA, (1,280 x 1,024) and (1600 x 1200) respectively. This ultra high-end resolution comes with a high price tag. Some projectors support a number of different resolutions, but the “default” is usually referred to as its native resolution.
Measured in Lumens, brightness is a very important specification to consider in your projector search, especially when looking for a portable projector to make presentations on the go in often less than ideal locations. Lumens refers to the intensity of the generated light, so if you are going to be using the projector for a large audience or in a sunny room, the higher the lumens should be. For larger sized audiences in a semi-darkened room, you will probably have to go with Ansi lumens measurements of 5,200 lumens. With a much smaller screening room that can get completely dark, you could make a clear, crisp presentation with a projector that puts out only 1,000 lumens. You often see lumens expressed as Ansi lumens in projector literature, ANSI is just a uniform standard of measuring lumens, by having a standard you can be sure you are comparing “apples to apples” as the saying goes.
“Throw distance” is another term of interest, it refers to the distance you can have the projector from the screen with a focused picture. For projectors that are designed to operate in large venues, further than 15 ft back from the screen, large throw or long throw lenses are the norm. For power point projector presentations, short throw projectors can be advantageous because you can place them at the front of the room near the screen (behind the presenter) and make your presentation without any obtrusive shadows on the screen or distracting projector lamps glaring at you.
Compatibility between your projector and laptop is also very important for smooth on the go presentations. Be sure that the resolution of both the projector and your laptop are compatible, ideally the same. Most of the time this is not an issue. In any case, still check to make sure you have the proper ports and cables at your disposal to connect your devices. Again, it’s exceedingly important that everything is compatible with your laptop.
