Need help with my GCSE electronics project and a PIR?

Right, I brought a Passive Infra-Red sensor from rapid online.

The specification of it can be found as a PDF on the page. There are three rails: a power, ground and output. I have used it as a NPN transistor, as I assumed that the output rail would give out voltage and so be used to open a CBC 548B transistor and so on. However, when using a multi meter, I’m getting negative voltage from the rail? On the specification it says it uses a ‘NPN transistor open-collector ouput form (active low)’. Any help right now would be amazing, thanks in advance.

Simply, an OC output is the equivalent of an NPN transistor, whose emitter is tied to ground, and collector is brought to the output by itself. When the circuit behind the transistor is “active”, it puts a positive signal on the base, “closing” the transistor, or pulling the output line to ground. When the circuit is “inactive”, the output is “open”, or just floats.

You can use an OC output in two ways.

First, is to sink a load, such as an LED or small relay coil, the other end connecting to the positive rail.

The second is to pull the OC output to the power rail with a 10K or so resistor. That will provide a logic signal for further processing.
