Self-Storage and Security of Property by David Cockle

Storage comes from the Old French word for store, estorer, which means “build, supply”. As it was associated with building, it could have meant the construction materials such as brick, wood, steel and whatever component materials were used in constructing commercial or residential buildings during that time. To assure its supply when required, it had to be kept in some sort of a storage room or warehouse or sourced from a nearby local supplier.

In modern use, the term is applied to keeping something, usually for future retrieval and use. It could be money or other valuables such as diamonds and precious jewellery securely deposited in individual safety deposit boxes or the vault for general use in a bank for a certain fee covered with a contract. Monetary deposits usually earn interest as it can be used by the bank for business. Warehouses offer similar services especially for commercial merchandise under a rental or leasehold agreement. Warehouses of shipping and transport companies offer security for cargoes and shipment not yet claimed by consignees or owners. A storage fee is charged for long term storage.

Family and personal possessions are domestically stored in cupboards which may overflow in the long run. It is normal and wise for people to sort things out when our local storage bins overflow, throwing away those that are no longer usable but earning some cash on other items that can still be sold in a garage sale.

Sometimes, an overflow “accidentally” occurs with being lucky to win a nice car in a promotional contest, for instance. We are suddenly confronted with an extra car in the old one that has to be disposed of. Good that in these modern times, we have what is termed as self-storage. We “deposit” the extra old car in the self-storage facility until it is disposed of.

Self-storage is almost a misnomer because the storage facility is not your own but is usually owned and operated by a company offering self-service storage services to customers for a certain fee. One thing that distinguishes the self-service storage facility from the regular warehouse is access to the rented the storage unit. The renter has exclusive access to the rented facility with his own lock and key as an assurance against theft or damage caused by intrusion by the self-storage company or its employees. Security is further enhanced from external factors and elements with professional security services for the whole storage facility.

Self-storage facilities are not only confined to cars but may include any and all articles for storage, but common sense dictates that items that are potential risks of damage or loss of life and property may not be accepted at all.
