SECURING YOUR HOME – PROTECT YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR PROPERTY

Just like a car, a home security system needs regular servicing and maintenance to ensure it operates effectively and reliably.  Yet it seems that many people are far more concerned about keeping their lawnmowers or their washing machine running optimally than they are about keeping their alarm systems in peak condition – which could mean they’re compromising their security.

It’s not a costly exercise to have security systems maintained and serviced, nor is it a particularly difficult job, yet many people simply don’t bother.   

Consider this :

·       Burglar alarms decrease crime in residential areas – a finding made after a five year study by the Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice .  Other research claims that household alarms can lead to a 40% reduction in the likelihood of a burglary.

·       Problems with insurance could arise if alarm systems are shown to be poorly maintained.

Additionally, many modern alarm systems are fitted with smoke detectors, which not only detect smoke but can also detect deadly carbon monoxide which rises faster than smoke, providing an early warning for danger.  It goes without saying that a faulty smoke detector would be tragic.

Frequent false alarm activations are another consequence of badly maintained alarm systems, and these are not only a nuisance and are irritating, but it can lead to alarms being deactivated … which compromises security.   

It’s best to keep the operating instructions readily available, and heed the manufacturer’s advice on what the  maintenance schedule should be.

The following advice on optimal maintenance comes from an established security systems and access control specialist in Perth, Australia, who recommend that alarm systems be given a full service once a year:

·       Test your alarm regularly.   If your system is monitored,  inform the security supplier before testing as they will have valuable input about signal strength etc.

·       Check that all activating units, audible warning devices (bells, sirens) are in good working order.

·       Check the back-up battery for voltage, cleanliness and corrosion.  The battery life should be around eight to twelve hours.

·       Dust around sensors and remove any webs or debris – and spray sensors with insect killer as ants, spiders etc can set off false alarms.

·       Ensure overhead components, wiring and conduiting aren’t damaged. 

·       Equipment should be well-ventilated.

·       Also check that remotes are fully operational with battery life in good order, as well as other components such as motion sensors and exterior beams also in good working order.

Alarm systems should also be checked for functionality after severe electric storms or if there have been noticeable power surges as these can cause false alarms and can compromise the structure of an alarm. 

A security system isn’t the only deterrent against crime.  Making sure that all other crime prevention elements are also in good working order such as perimeter fencing, door and window locks, security screens, exterior lighting and security signage is also necessary to ensure the safety and security of your family and your assets.
