how many times can you record over on a vcr tape?

i need something to record over and over again from a video camera. a vcr would be easiest for my application but I can try and use something digital If vcr is a bad idea. what do home security systems video systems record on?…Im not doing anything with security by the way.

standard length tape will last a long time in security use. consider that they are rarely played, often recorded over again and never played. also you should have a number of tapes, used in rotation, like one for each day of the week, If you did that, then the group of seven should be good for about 6 years. Using extra length tape will result in drastic reduction of service life and run a greater risk of damage from mis-threading.
