Effexor and Milk Thistle: A Safe Combination?
Can any chemists or biologists let me know if it is safe to take effexor and milk thistle simultaneously? I read about an enzyme, CYP3A4, that is affected by milk thistle and Effexor is a substrate (not sure what that means) when broken down by the liver. Please indicate in layman’s terms what occurs when a drug like Effexor is broken down in one’s liver and the impact milk thistle might have on liver function. Thanks so much.
Essentially, Effexor has to be changed (metabolized) in the liver in order to become “active.” According to the information on Wyeth’s website, this is mainly done by the liver enzyme CYPD26. I have not found any information that Milk Thistle has any known effect on that particular enzyme. It is known to increase the presence of some similar enzymes, however. This means that there is a slight chance that Milk Thistle could lead to you effectively having a HIGHER than recommended dose of effexor in your bloodstream. However, it is unlikely that this would be significant unless you are taking massive doses of Milk Thistle.
