What size hinges do I need to support a 16′ (350 pound) gate?

I bought a tube gate and I want to attach fence boards to make it a solid gate. Fence boards plus the tube gate equals 350 pounds.

(I am planning to use the 2 lag bolts that came with the tube gate frame (68 pounds) . Those lag bolts are a full 1/2″ in diameter and screwed five inches into a 4 X 8 treated post.

Do I need to buy a lag bolt kit and make it 3 hinges? If I use even 4 hinges, will they coordinate all help pull (hold) the weight ? —–or will only two of the hinges be bearing the weight?.

(my remote control gate opener is rated at 550 pound)

the hinge should be fine, the demand on the top hinge should be 350# * 16′/2 = 2800 foot pounds divided by the hinges at at least 4 feet apart, so that’s 700 pounds of pullout demand on the hinge hardware. two 1/2″ diameter lag bolts into wood would give you much more than that. the weak link in the system is the post. the post base has to be deep enough or fastened to a block wall parallel to the gate in the closed position. otherwise, a substantial footing for the post will be required to prevent the post from leaning.
if you choose to go with more than two hinges, all the hinges will share the weight of the fence although they won’t share the equal amount.
