Night Vision Security

is there such a thing as a camera that can record in total darkness?

i have just bought a ‘night vision’ security camera from ebay and it stated on the description that you do not need any light. i tried it out and it doesn’t work in total darkness which is what i needed it for. you need street lighting etc for the camera to work.
is there a security camera that doesn’t need any light to work as it is for my nans garden due to the fact people keep breaking into her sheds. but because of where her garden is situated there is no lights at all. she has a security light but that is directed in front of her bedroom window which alerts her if someone gets too close to the house.
please help

Many digi cameras have infra red imaging (even my Nokia phone)
These don’t need light but give a black and white image.
