AAA blog: Gainesville rolls after humble beginning (ajc)

August 26 looks so long ago now. For the Gainesville football team, that night
probably seemed like it would never end. A 49-0 loss at the hands of Class AA
Buford made a state semifinals appearance look like a longshot, but here the
Red Elephants are, having vanquished Class AAA’s elephant in the room with a
35-21 win over defending state champion Sandy Creek. The Buford loss now
simply looks like water over the dam.

Next up is a set-to with Burke County with a Georgia Dome appearance on the
line.

“I’m just so happy we won and we advanced,” said Gainesville coach Bruce
Miller. “This group of kids has been so resilient all year.”

Meanwhile, Sandy Creek’s winning streak was halted at 41 games in large part
because of Gainesville sophomore quarterback Deshaun Watson, who passed for
201 yards and rushed for 123 accounting for all five Gainesville touchdowns.
Watson passed or ran on 60 of Gainesville’s 70 offensive plays.
