What to do if your landlord deceives you before renting a house?

I recently rented a house in an inner city neighborhood. Of course in the city there is always the chance of crime but my neighborhood is pretty transitional.

Crime rate was the deciding factor for my sister and I since we are two single young girls and one young child. The landlord assured us in the 3 years he has owned the home that there has been no crime, no break ins, car theft, etc… There is a monitoring alarm system on the house also.

Before moving we noticed a crack in the front window and brought this to the attention of the LL. He told us it was from the front door constantly slamming. But it’s double paned so not to worry.

Today, now 2 weeks into living there, I discovered that near that crack, the monitoring alarm system sticker was covering up a BULLET HOLE in our front window. My landlord straight up lied!!!

WHAT ARE MY RIGHTS?

Any statement from a landlord regarding crime in the area or lack there of is NOT legally binding. landlords are also no legally required to tell a tenant about any previous criminal activity or problems at the property. It may not have been morally right but he did not break any laws in hiding the bullet hole from you. Landlords are not responsible for crime in the neighborhood either. You cannot break a lease over crime or hold the landlord responsible in any way.

It may not seem fair but it is the tenant’s responsibility to thoroughly check out a neighborhood before you rent a place. You can always check crime rates in a certain area by checking with the local police station.
