Factors To Consider When Installing Security Lighting
We often say as safe as houses but sometimes incidents like breaks-in and burglaries defy the notion that home is the safest place one can be. Even in what can be considered safe neighborhoods, or commercial districts for that matter, it does no harm to take measures to ensure this. One way to do this is by installing security lighting in and around the home and commercial property. These lights may be in form of floodlights and sodium vapor lights. They may be motion-sensitive lights which come on when movement around the perimeter of a property is detected.
These lights not only make it easy to spot imposters but they also discourage them from even attempting to break in. Interestingly, there is a contradiction about security lights that can accomplish the opposite of the desired result.
Surveys in Sweden and UK showed that having lights on all night made people feel they were safe but crime rates went up by as much as 55 percent. This was in contrast to dimly lit or dark areas which people assumed were unsafe and therefore avoided. Generally though, security lights enhance rather than compromise safety.
On the whole however, these lights tend to attract people rather than deter them. Design is one crucial factor. Badly designed lighting can cause glare which hinders rather than boosts the vision of those keeping watch. It should be undertaken to keep the view sharp and clear, depending on whether it is man or machinery that will be on guard.
The position of the lights also matters. It is possible for them to get sabotaged and they should be placed as out of reach as possible. High mounting is one way to do this and another option is surrounding them with tough barriers or wire meshing.
This can be lights using pipes through which light is directed. It is also important that these lights have reliable back-up such as a generator that comes on automatically within seconds of the power supply going off.
