There is no doubt that installing a home security system accompanied with security monitoring is the best way to protect both your property and your family. Today, the options in home security are vast – and all are designed to give the homeowner the benefit of knowing what is going at and around their home. An alarm system can be your first defense in preventing a break-in, can lower your annual home insurance rates, and can give you peace of mind when it comes to your safety.

Interestingly, one of the most basic aspects of home security is often looked over when individuals or professionals outfit a home with a home security system.

What is this essential piece of equipment? A driveway alarm.

Today many homeowners have long and winding driveways or driveways were their vision is obscured for much of the path. You may live off the beaten path, or have a gated driveway for this reason. However, most homeowners also get tired of opening and closing gates on a daily basis and eventually end up leaving their property open. This is where a driveway alarm can come in handy.

Driveway alarms can be installed professionally, or you can purchase a kit locally from a home improvement store. The kits normally include a base unit that you keep in your home, as well as a unit that you set up at the driveway. These alarms work wirelessly or remotely, and use infrared technology. Some come equipped with driveway cameras that will allow the homeowner to gain a visual of the driveway. But essentially, their function is to sound an alarm or beep, anytime someone breaks the plane of your driveway. They can give you a heads up letting you know that your UPS man has just driven in, that guests or arriving or more importantly, that someone has come to your home unexpected. Not only does this give you time to prepare, but also ensures that no one can sneak up on your property unannounced. And since the console is inside the house, the perpetrator will not know that they have sounded any alarm.

If you are installing a driveway alarm, make sure that you do so in an inconspicuous place. This way, thieves won’t try to tamper with the alarm to make it inactive. You can hide it under shrubbery and should put in a place that alerts you the minute someone pulls in your driveway.
