Internet Auto And RV Scams – How to Recognize Them by ih8scammers
There’s a lot of scam activity on the Web in the used-car and RV areas, and a lot of people are losing money from it – sometimes thousands of dollars. Here are some tips on how to recognize a scam.
Red flag #1 – The price is way too low.
Most scam ads are for a vehicle that is less than 10 years old, or an RV that is less than 15 years old, but priced much, much lower than it should be – for example, a 2002 Cadillac Escalade SUV for $2,500. If you’ve been looking at ads for a while, especially if you want something specific, you probably have a good idea of price ranges. Scam prices are usually nowhere near those ranges; they’re set really low to attract more buyers/victims.
Of course it’s possible to find late-model vehicles with low prices. But they’ll usually have a good reason for that price – high miles, major repairs needed, or damage from an accident. Check the ad. If it says the vehicle is in “perfect,” “near new,” or “excellent” condition then there’s no reason for the price to be that low unless it’s a typo – or a scam.
Red flag #2 – The only way to communicate with the seller is by email.
Scammers use email mainly because it’s anonymous.There is no face to look at or voice to hear, and you’ll never find out their true location (which is frequently not even in the U.S.).
Red flag #3 – You can’t inspect or pick up the vehicle in person.
Once again, this is for reasons of anonymity (and of course because there is no real vehicle to look at). This can be really confusing if the ad is on a local classifieds site. But the scammer will have an explanation prepared for the situation. The most common ones are military deployment, death of the owner during military service, and relocation of the owner due to divorce or a death in the family.
Red flag #4 – The vehicle or RV will be shipped to you for free.
This is the second part of the previous explanation – the vehicle is not in your area but it will be shipped to you for free. Shipping of something as big as a car or even an RV is available but it can add a lot to the cost. The scammer knows that you may be concerned about that so there will be a reasonably plausible explanation for why there’s no charge. Usually it involves a previous buyer who paid for the shipping but then backed out of the sale, or a military base that is shipping the vehicle on one of its planes (in which case the scammer is depending on the victim’s ignorance of how vehicle sales are handled on bases).
Red flag #5 – The only way you can pay for the vehicle is by wire transfer.
Debit and credit card payments can be reversed and check payments can be stopped. Wire transfer, on the other hand, is almost completely non-recoverable, so it’s the only “safe” way for the scammer to collect the money. The payment process usually involves a fake escrow service, or a legitimate service that actually doesn’t operate the way the scammer says (eBay’s Buyer Protection Plan, AutoTrader, Google Checkout, Amazon Payments etc.). But the actual payment is always done by wire transfer, and it’s the last part of the scam. Once the money is sent the scam is over. Some scammers will ask for more money (which is usually a giveaway that the “sale” is a con) but most just stop communicating after that. And messages sent by the victim when the vehicle never arrives are not answered.
The last stage of the process is of course the most dangerous because that’s when the actual theft takes place. I’m hoping these tips will help more people recognize the scam and stop the process before they send – and lose – any money.
