A duct smoke detector is a device or group of devices used to detect the presence of smoke in the airstream of ductwork sections of the air handling systems typically used in commercial buildings. The primary purpose of duct smoke detection is to prevent injury, panic, and property damage by reducing the spread (recirculation) of smoke. It is not a substitute for an area smoke detector, early warning dtection or a replacemnt for a buliding’s regular fire detetectoin system.

A smoke damper is a device to resist the passage of smoke which is arranged to operate automatically and controlled by a smoke detector.

A fire damper works differently such that if there is fire, a fusible link will fuse off from the heat and the damper blade will be closed shut by means of tensioned spring.
