Dog Door – Installation Tips for Dog Owners
You need to pick the right size and locking features, at the very least, when planning to install a dog door in your home.
The door Size and size-cut aspects – you should measure your dog’s height, weight, and shoulder fit
Dog doors come in many sizes, some can be enough to fit a range of dog heights and shoulder widths. But if you dog is a large as pony, you should get the extra large doors. You may want to think about a custom-order dog, especially if yours is really a big dog, with a capital B. Since the large dog doors usually already come at an extra large size, there’s not much adjustment to do.
If you don’t have a big, big dog then you’ll be looking at the common size range of dog doors, one that offers at least three size categories in the size cut guide – small, medium, and large. This means you need to measure your dog’s height (from foot to head while it’s standing on all fours) and the width of its shoulders. Don’t guess, go ahead and measure and check where that measurement falls under in the size cut guide. Carefully measure your pet’s dimensions and then simply follow the size cut guide.
There’s probably no one who knows your pet better than you do, but just to be on the safe size, if you make a mistake and choose a smaller cut size of the dog door for your pet, you could end up inconveniencing your dog. Your pet might need to kneel a bit lower and crawl just to get in.
Some pets are known to muscle their way when they see a way in or out, one in which they think they can fit through. Quick entrances and exits like this are common when dogs are at play. That’s when the smaller sized dog door comes into play – your dog could get injured or at least hurt when it forces itself through that ill-fitting dog door. What if your dog was being chased by an enemy dog, or is running scared of an intruder? Kneeling to get through that door is a hassle.
Soft or hard flaps – your choice
When you have several dogs and you have a fenced garden or yard, that means your dogs can set up a running route around and through your house. You’ll need a dog door with a soft flap for that, so your dogs can enjoy the run and the exercise, which is good for them. For small home with over-energetic dogs that may abuse a soft flap, it’s recommended you use a hard flap.
Lock settings on dog doors and why they matter
What a dog owner, worried about his pet, may want is some added lock settings to the dog flap. You can set it up to lock after your dog comes home at night, so the dog can’t leave again. You can do the reverse so that flap would lock when the dog leaves, allowing you to clean the house without interruptions. You should think about getting an automatic door if you’re still worried about forced entry of other animals. Your pet will be allowed to pass through the door since it unlocks in response only to your pet.
