Stinky, cloudy aquarium with a high pH.?
I have a 18 gallon aquarium. After reading up, I knew I needed to cycle the tank. I filled my tank 8 days ago with de-chlorinated tap water. I’ve been using Seachem’s Stability product to help establish the biofilter. I have a combination carbon and biofilter filter on my tank.
There are NO fish in the tank. I am waiting until it is properly cycled to introduce any fish.
Problem is the water is very cloudy and it’s starting to stink. The pH is constantly higher than the 7.6 my test kits can read. (So is my tap water). Is the smell a normal part of the nitrogen cycle, or do I have problems? Should I start doing water changes?
What do I do about the pH? My tap water is hard, but I don’t want to add chemicals to temporarily force it to stabilize? Should I try driftwood? Or stock the tank with fish that thrive in a higher pH?
If your source water is hard and alkaline, which is apparently the case, it will be hard to lower either value (pH or hardness) unless you just use different water (such as RO-treated water or rainwater). So yes, I think the most practical approach is to choose fish that do well with a high pH, such as Rift Lake cichlids and some livebearers. You also need to get a “high range” pH test kit (one where the scale goes up to 9 or above), so you can find out what your pH really is.
The water should not smell noticeably bad while the tank is “cycling.” I have 50 aquariums in my house, and they don’t have much smell at all.
What did you put in the tank to feed the bacteria during the “fishless cycling”? Ammonia? Dead fish? Fish food? And how much?
I suspect that, for some reason or other, some of the organic material in the tank may be undergoing anaerobic decomposition, which does indeed smell bad (usually sort of a rotten-egg or sewer-like smell). If this is the case, it will be important to find out what’s rotting in the tank and remove it.
And yes, do several large (50% or more) water changes before you put fish in the tank.
