Three Factors to Consider When Choosing Security Systems For Home and Business   by Kathryn Dawson

For home owners and business owners alike, security systems provide a peace of mind that is invaluable. But with such a wide variety of systems, cameras and even kits on offer, it can be difficult to know how to choose the right one. After all, not every system suits specific situations, with homes dealing with only a tiny fraction of the faces and figures that a high street store would have to deal with.

There are a few pointers that one should take with them when looking for the right system. They are not just what types of security cameras can be used nor, for that matter, whether the cctv dvr is of the required standard. It also has to do with the purpose and position of the system and its cameras, as is the performance of cameras in poor light and the clarity of the images they record.

Location, Location, Location

The phrase may be used widely in property sales talk, but location is equally important when it comes to choosing the right system. To this end, one needs to be completely clear on where cameras are to be placed before choosing a system, with some of the specific issues to be addressed being whether cameras will be used outdoors and, if so, their distance from the main building. If they are to be used indoors, then their distance from the digital video recorder and strength of signal remote cameras have.

With regards outdoor cameras, there is a need to check the IP rating as this relates specifically to the ability of the camera to with stand the elements. Remember that between wind, rain and snow, any outdoor device is susceptible to minute pieces of flying debris in the air, a range of moisture and humidity levels and condensation, all of which can be highly damaging to a camera that is not built robustly enough.

Indoors, the signal from camera to internet or recorder must remain strong or valuable footage can be lost, though the development of stand alone cameras with inbuilt recording capabilities negates that risk.

Lux Rating

Lux is the official measurement of light, with the lower lux rating the lower the degree of illumination in any given place. When it comes cctv cameras, this is of particular importance for outdoor systems because of their need to record over night, and the fact that their vision is not always helped by flood lights or spot lights. The lux rating that one wants to have is zero or one, both of which mean that the camera can recorded clearly in very, very low light.

Actually, the lux rating can depend on the frame rate of the specific camera, with lower rates allowing for a longer exposure time, which in turn allows for more information to be captured. This is why, for example, still cameras do not use lux ratings at all. However, cameras with fast frame speeds need help to ensure they capture an image, in detail in the dark.

Picture Resolution Level

When it comes to the practical purpose of cameras, the resolution level is essential. The resolution of an image refers to its clarity, with faces, number plates, signs and other individual items often needing to be identified clearly. For police officers, there is a need to establish the identity of specific people when an incident occurs. This means looking at cctv footage, and using the zoom option to examine faces.

The resolution quality of a camera is not enough though, with monitors and recording equipment also influencing the quality of the pictures being viewed. For example, even if the resolution of the camera is high, if the monitor it is viewed on is low grade, then the picture will not be crystal clear. It is best to get a high definition monitor, while a digital video recorder will store pictures from a digital camera perfectly.

When it comes to purchasing security systems, there are any number of reasons to buy one, but the purpose is always to record what happens when no one is there to see. Security, of course, is hugely important but the system installed is of little use if the quality of the security cameras being used, and the cctv dvr, is of a low grade.

In that case, when a break in occurs, or any other event that requires police attention, the chances of identifying and punishing the culprit is next to zero.
