How can I stabalise camera motion when using a dolly on an uneven surface such as a pavement?
How can I stabalise camera motion when using a dolly on an uneven surface such as a pavement?
I’m using a manfrotto 181b dolly with a 055 pro B tripod which is giving me great smooth shots on carpet and laminate flooring, but not so great on hard bumpy surfaces like pavements or tiles. I’ve been looking for some kind of stabiliser that will work with the dolly but cant seem to find any. I know I could get a steadycam but i specifically want to keep using the dolly.
Typically, if a steadicam/camera vest type system is not used, you have a couple of options.
For short sequences, you could use a camera crane/jib set up and follow the action.
For a little longer sequence, a track can be built. Generally, the track looks like a train track, and the dolly wheels ride the rails.

For a really long sequence, you could shoot from a truck bed or from inside a car or other vehicle. One shoot I was on, we got lucky and one of the grips had a VW camper where the side door opened up… you can do the same with a minivan (take out the seat if you need room) or shoot out the back of a pick-up or van with the tailgate open. Because the engine noise was not desirable, three of us just pushed the camper… Works great for flat surfaces and coasting downhill… DO NOT DO THIS GOING UPHILL! Yes, you still need someone steering. SAFETY FIRST.
