Back in the 70′s when the gas crunch hit, locking doors for your gas cap and locking gas caps were enough.

Now, however, folks are leaning more toward damage to get at the gas. I was considering a locking gas cap until I heard a report that ripping the takes our and punching holes in the tanks are the current methods of choice for stealing from cars. Instead, I’m looking at my small, non-descript car to provide protection because it doesn’t look like an attractive target. Since I’m driving a fairly small car and the targets of choice tend to be big vehicles with big tanks, I’m not especially worried.

With the sentiment of everyone I know about car alarm systems (they go off for no reason so often that people generally ignore them, and a good thing, too, or I’d have a lot of explaining to do for when I hit the wrong button on my spouse’s car’s remote), I’m just as glad not to have one.

And we don’t have a garage, or even a driveway. We park on the street by necessity.

A guy at work had 3 gallons siphoned out of his motorcycle tank while he was in a restaurant the other week–the bike was in his pick-up truck, and somebody got themselves their lawn-mower gas for free. But a bike tank is an easier siphon-job than a car, these days.

So at the moment, I’m not going to be doing anything different than I already do. 5 days a week, the car is gone from 6:30 am to 5:30 PM, and is parked in a company lot at the ragged end of no-where–so that time I’m confident about. If I lived in a rougher neighborhood or a more urban? Maybe.
